Karygiannis discusses terrorism and transportation with officials from the EU and NATO
OTTAWA The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, attended three days of briefings at The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) on security and other issues, which included terrorism. The forum of Canadian political and business leaders was organized by the Council on Transatlantic Relations (CTR) which arranged for briefings by senior NATO and EU officials. NATO members are fighting terrorism around the world. The EU has faced terrorist attacks. said Mr. Karygiannis. Our systems of transportation are being used to terrorize us planes in the US, trains in Spain, subways and buses in England.
The NATO briefings covered NATO-EU relations; the fight against terrorism; Canada's role in NATO; NATO in Afghanistan; NATO-Russia and NATO Ukraine relations; and, Mediterranean Dialogue. A NATO official expressed great satisfaction at the opportunity to brief the high-level delegation brought together by the CTR and looks forward to working with Mr. Karygiannis and other members of the delegation in promoting international security. Upon returning to Canada, Mr. Karygiannis will discuss these issues with the Federal Ministers involved with Canadian security. He will also work with the CTR and NATO officials to facilitate a conference of transportation experts to share best practices in the fight against terrorism. 30
