Jobs in Ontario
continue to disappear

Manufacturing jobs in Ontario
continue to disappear
Disappearing manufacturing
jobs do not bode well for the Ontarians given
that manufacturing is one of
the pillars of Ontario's economy.
"Ontario residents are
heavily reliant on manufacturing jobs for their
prosperity," said Ted
Chudleigh, Halton MPP and opposition critic for
Economic Development and
Trade for the Progressive Conservative Caucus.
"These numbers suggest
Ontario is losing its competitive edge and jobs are
going elsewhere."
Ontario has lost 49,000
manufacturing jobs since August 2004. Quebec,
Alberta and British Columbia
have also experienced manufacturing job
losses
but not to the same degree as
Ontario.
"Job reductions are an
indicator that we could face an economic recession
in
the future which is likely
being fuelled by both higher taxes and energy
costs," said Mr.
Chudleigh. "It also means there are fewer people paying
taxes and less money to pay
for government services like health care and
education."
Mr. Chudleigh called on the
Liberal government to address the
competitiveness issue before
Ontario becomes mired in an economic
downturn.
He said if efforts are made
now they could reduce the effect of higher
energy costs on the economy.
