Volunteers Help Make Our Communities, Safe, Caring And Prosperous

TORONTO, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - More than 8,300 volunteers will be honoured with

Ontario Volunteer Service Awards and Outstanding Achievement Awards at 27

separate ceremonies throughout the province this fall, Minister of Citizenship

and Immigration Dr. Marie Bountrogianni announced today.

"Volunteers are a precious resource that contribute to building strong,

healthy and prosperous communities," said Minister of Citizenship and

Immigration Dr. Marie Bountrogianni. "It's important to recognize their many

contributions to improve the quality of life in their communities."

"Volunteers Build Communities" is this year's theme to honour the 2004

VSA recipients.

Volunteer Service Awards are an annual opportunity for the Ontario

government to recognize the adult volunteers with five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40

and 50-plus years of continuous service. Youth are recognized for two or more

years of volunteerism. All award winners receive a stylized Trillium pin and a

personalized certificate.

Outstanding Achievement Awards for Volunteerism (OAA) are presented to

individuals, groups or businesses for superlative contributions to the

voluntary sector. This year, 17 OAA awards are being presented across the

province.

"Every day, thousands of citizens volunteer their time, energy and skills

to help others." said Bountrogianni. "They truly build our communities, making

them strong and vibrant."
