DAUGHTER OF PATRIDES WESTERN BUREAU WEDS

ANGELATOS - MORRISON

Dimitrios and Siegrid Katerina Angelatos of Surrey, (the Patrides reps in British Columbia) are pleased to announce the marriage of their youngest daughter, Irene Penelope to Christopher Scott, youngest son of Larrie and Karen Morrison of Surrey. The wedding took place on Sunday, September 5th at Peace Arch Park in Surrey, which is also the site of one of the busiest and most beautiful US/Canada border crossings in Canada.

It was a gorgeous day for an outdoor wedding in a beautiful setting. The sun was shining and the flowers in the park were in full bloom. The ceremony site, on one of the park’s hilltops had the Peace Portal and the Pacific Ocean as its backdrop, with the lily pond and flower beds at its feet. The flower girls, the bridesmaids and the bride and her father climbed the stone steps from the lily pond to reach the ceremony site above, where the groom and his attendants, the family, friends and onlookers awaited them. The Greek Orthodox marriage service was conducted by Archbishop Lazaros, assisted by Bishop Varlaam and Father Moses, all of the Monastery of All Saints of North America located in Mission, BC. Also assisting was Deacon John of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Langley.

Irene was attended by her sister Margarita as matron of honour. Margarita had made the beautiful tiara and jewellery worn by the bride as well as all the floral arrangements for the wedding. Anthea Angelatos, cousin of the bride and Brooke Brooks, a friend since early childhood were the bridesmaids. The flower-girls were the brides close family friends, Kianna Eleni Idreou and Tamika and Shino Cuyler. The groom was attended by his brother, Rob Morrison as best man and Alexi Angelatos, the brother of the bride as “koubaros”.  Colin Ioannis Idreou was the ring-bearer.

The stefena used for the ceremony have become part of the Angelatos family tradition. They originated in Greece and were first used in 1970 at the marriage of the brides parents at St. Dimitrios Orthodox Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba and then again in 2002 for the marriage of the bride’s sister, Margarita. It is hoped that some day other members of the family will be “crowned” with the same stefena.

A reception followed at the hall and picnic area on the Canadian side of the Park. Appetizers were served outdoors right after the ceremony. This was followed soon after by a buffet dinner. The smell of lamb roasted on the spit and the souvlaki on the grill wafted throughout the park, bringing in many curios onlookers. The master of ceremonies for the evening was the bride’s brother-in-law Owen Dyck. Out of town guests came from Bellingham, Washington, various parts of British Columbia, and from Saskatchewan.  The bride’s aunts, great-uncle and cousins travelled the farthest, coming from Manitoba. All the guests were treated to a special performance by the three flower girls who sang and danced to “Love Will Keep Us Together-Forever”, which they dedicated to Irene and Chris. The guests also enjoyed watching the “first” dance which also veered from the traditional. The young couple decided to celebrate Irene’s Greek heritage by changing the usual waltz to a Greek dance, the haposerviko, at which the bridal party and the parents also joined in.

The young couple will be taking a honeymoon at a later date as both had to be in classrooms two days after their wedding. Chris will be completing his studies at BCIT’s airport campus the end of October. Irene works as an elementary school teacher in Surrey.

CYPRUS ASSOCIATION HOLDS ANNUAL PICNIC

The Cyprus Community of BC held its annual picnic on Sunday, September 5th. It has been a custom of that group for many years to hold this annual event at Peace Arch Park in Surrey, which is also the location of the busiest US/Canada border crossing in British Columbia.

The group was just one of many that enjoyed the day in the park. British Columbia had experienced a long dry summer before the rainy weather had begun near the end of August. At first it did not look promising for a picnic but the sky opened up with sunshine that weekend, and the temperature was perfect for this and many other outdoor events.

Patrides representative Dimitrios Angelatos was so busy that day with his daughter’s wedding, also held in the park that he did not even find the time to photograph the Cyprus Community picnic. However, some of the people from the Cyprus group were able to wander over to watch the Angelatos wedding as well as some others that were taking place in the park that day.
