Financial Donation Made to American Red Cross

Largest Greek-American Organization responds to national tragedy

Issues call to action to local chapters

WASHINGTON - The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the nation's largest and oldest Greek-American organization with 523 chapters worldwide and 20,000 active members, is saddened by yesterday's horrific events and expresses its deep condolences to the families of the innocent victims involved, announced President Andrew T. Banis. In addition, Banis offered the support of the Greek-American community for President George W. Bush's efforts to find and punish the perpetrators of these despicable acts.

"The terrorist attack upon America was an attack upon democracy; one of the greatest contributions to Western Civilization by the ancient Greeks," said Banis. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy."

AHEPA Chairman of the Board A. Steve Betzelos and President Banis announced a financial contribution on behalf of AHEPA National to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The organization will mobilize its network of chapters, urging them to contribute to the ongoing humanitarian relief efforts, he added. Today, Banis directed the organization's chapters and members to organize blood drives, donate blood, contribute financial aid, and to observe a moment of silence at upcoming chapter events. Also, he asked all Americans of Greek descent to fly American flags at half-mast.

"AHEPA's record of service to the community over its 80 years is unmatched, having provided significant contributions to our country in times of great need," said Banis. "Therefore, in the spirit of patriotism and our mission, I strongly urge our members and chapters to work with local disaster relief organizations such as the American Red Cross to assist with relief efforts."

The mission of AHEPA is to promote the ideals of Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence.

AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, and Cyprus and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith to fight discrimination.

In its history, AHEPA raised $162 million in war bonds during World War II and contributed tens of millions in disaster relief both domestically and internationally.

The AHEPA family consists of four organizations: AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena.
