THE CANADA PAVILION AT THE

HAMILTON 2003 ROAD WORLD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Local artists and athletes share their passion for culture and sport in Canada

 

The Government of Canada’s Canada Pavilion is coming to the Hamilton 2003 Road World Cycling Championships.  From October 6th to October 12th, the Canada Pavilion will be located in the Expo-Village just beside the Hamilton City Hall. 

 

The Canada Pavilion offers one-stop access to information on Government of Canada programs and services. The Canada Pavilion invites visitors to contribute to the portrait of Canada by taking part in “Canada: A Land of Passion” events.  Highlighting our passion for sports, local artists and athletes will share their talents with visitors through interactive hands-on demonstrations.  Visitors can also receive a photo of themselves taking part in an activity. 

During the Hamilton 2003 Road World Cycling Championships, actor Peter Steele-Mosey will be at the Canada Pavilion daily to invite visitors to experience the passion of the artists and athletes present at the Pavilion. A variety of activities will be available at the Canada Pavilion including:

October 7:    National Cycling Team autograph signing

                     Official Opening with Member of Parliament Stan Keyes (2pm)

                     Canadian Football Hall of Fame – Grey Cup trophy display and photo opportunities

October 8:    Bicycle Safety and Repair Clinic

October 9:    ESTEEM Team – Athlete speaker presentations

       (1 hour each) and autograph sessions

October 10:  ESTEEM Team – Disabled Athlete speaker presentations 

                      (1 hour each) and autograph sessions

October 11:  Samba Squad

October 12:  MC Moreorles

This year, the Government of Canada will promote access of programs and services to Canadians through a variety of venues including 14 fairs and events across the country and their permanent information centre at Canada Quay in Toronto.

 

Canada Quay provides one-stop access to information on Government of Canada programs and services, holds workshops, and hosts ministerial events. This centre, open seven days a week, is located at 235 Queen’s Quay West on Toronto’s Harbourfront. You can contact Canada Quay at (416) 952-0840.

Tuesday, October 7th, 2003: A Passion for Sport with the National Cycling Team

 

Description:

 

The Canada Pavilion officially opens at 2:00 pm with greetings from Member of Parliament for Hamilton West, Stan Keyes.

 

Members of the National Cycling Team will take part in the ceremony, and will be available to sign autographs immediately following.

 

The Grey Cup, championship trophy of the Canadian Football League, will be available for photo opportunities from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Pavilion.

 

Wednesday, October 8th, 2003: A Passion for Sport with Bike Mechanic Gareth Carr

Times: 10:00 a.m. – 5::00 p.m.

 

Description:

 

Mechanic Gareth Carr will show you how to take proper care of your bicycle as he performs a repair clinic in the Canada Pavilion. Bring your bike for a free tune-up and learn how to keep it in great shape!

 

Thursday, October 9th, 2003:  A Passion for Sport with ESTEEM Team

Times: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

ESTEEM Team inspires young people to have the courage to achieve what they want to do in life. ESTEEM Team Athletes are real life people who have experienced and overcome many of the same challenges as today’s youth.

Saturday, October 11th, 2003: A Passion for Sport with the Samba Squad

Description:

 

In the past three years SAMBA SQUAD has risen from a community based drumming school into one of the most dynamic and sought after acts on the Canadian world and Latin music scenes. Samba Squad was awarded the UMAC (Urban Music Assoc. of Canada) Award for Best World Recording of 2001. The drum group performs a variety of samba-based West African, Caribbean and Afro-Cuban styles of Carnival rhythms and has become one of the most exhilarating live music experiences in the area. Led by award-winning percussionist Rick Shadrach Lazar (Montuno Police, Loreena McKennitt), the SAMBA SQUAD has performed on CTV’s Open-Mike with Mike Bullard and appeared at countless summer festivals.

 

Sunday, October 12th, 2003: A Passion for Sport with MC More or Les

Show times: 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

 

Description: 

 

Born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Toronto emcee More or Les combines intelligent rhymes with funk instrumentals and bombastic beats. According to Curbside Mag, “energetic, smooth, witty and comical are just some words that can be used to describe Les’ flow.” More Or Les released his debut album I only stop for the Red Ants, on April 30, 2003. The album is notable for funny, socially conscious rhymes, rooted in the pure love of Hip Hop. More Or Les recently won an in-studio battle on MuchEminem at Much Music and now brings his unique brand of urban music to the Canada Pavilion.­
