McGuinty government signals commitment to education
TORONTO, Oct. 23 /CNW/ - The decision to name Gerard Kennedy as Ontario's next Minister of Education signals the sincerity of Dalton McGuinty's promise to restore peace and stability to Ontario's education system, says Donna Marie Kennedy, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association,OECTA. "Gerard Kennedy's years as education critic have prepared him to take on the challeges that the education portfolio holds. We know that he is thoroughly familiar with all the many complex education issues. His experience, and the Premier's personal support, will help the government act quickly to address the most pressing matters our students and schools face." Ms. Kennedy says that she is confident that the new education minister will continue the open consultation with teachers that he established during his term as education critic. "This government values teachers as professionals and will work with us, as well as parents and all citizens of the province, to restore the education system for our students." OECTA represents 34,000 elementary and secondary teachers in Ontario's Catholic School System.
