AMERICAN
HELLENIC EDUCATIONAL PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION, AHEPA AND
THE AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR GREEK LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, AFGLC FORM
IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

Former
AHEPA President James S. Scofield and Dr. Chris P. Tsokos, President of
AFGLC sign the official agreement with Mr. Gus Stathis a trustee of AFGLC
and more than 50 years a member of AHEPA, along with other officials.
The
American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture (AFGLC) is
delighted to announce that they have formed an official educational
partnership with the American Hellenic Educational Progressive
Association (AHEPA), the largest Greek-American organization in the
country.
The resolution authorizing the partnership was unanimously passed
by the directors of AHEPA at their annual meeting in Miami and was signed
into law by Mr. James Scofield, former Supreme President, acting as
plenipotentiary for Mr. Franklin Manios, Supreme President at the time of
the signing. The partnership was jointly announced by Mr. Scofield and
AFGLC president Chris P. Tsokos at the March, 2005, Educational Forum of
AFGLC, held on the Tampa Campus of the University of South Florida, and at
the AFGLC annual Gala at the Renaissance Tampa Hotel, International Plaza.
The specific resolutions of the partnership call for both
organizations to collaborate in preserving and enhancing the teaching of
Hellenic language and culture at institutions of higher learning in the
U.S. through the joint establishment of AHEPA-AFGLC Interdisciplinary
Centers for Hellenic Studies at selected campuses. Each Center will
resemble the flagship ICHS at the University of South Florida, and consist
of five endowed professorships named for AHEPA and AFGLC. The AFGLC plan
for furthering Hellenic education through Interdisciplinary Centers
furthers very precisely AHEPA’s educational mission and helps to assure
that future generations of world leaders will not be ignorant of the debt
owed to the Hellenic origins of democracy.
The partnership, which is to be carried out at the national,
regional and local levels, follows the model established by AFGLC. Each
Cneter will consist of five named endowed professorships, in Greek
language and culture, Greek history, Greek philosophy, Greek culture, and
Byzantine history and Orthodox religion.
Much credit goes to former Supreme Presidents Franklin Manios,
James Scofield, and A. Jack Georgalas for their far-sighted encouragement
of this joining of forces in the cause of Hellenic education.
Members of AFGLC and AHEPANS
celebrate the signing ceremonies.
