Daughters of Penelope Continues Its Outreach to Capitol Hill

DOP National President Meets with Members of Congress on Various Issues

WASHINGTON (November 12, 2007)—The Daughters of Penelope (DOP), a preeminent international women’s organization, continued on its “Civic Responsibility Campaign” as Grand President Karen Stamatiades met with various members of Congress to create awareness of the organization’s role and charitable works within the community.

“Many of our members have expressed great interest and excitement over our Civic Responsibility Campaign,” said Stamatiades, who met with members of Congress on Nov. 6 - 8.  “They are looking forward to becoming more engaged in this initiative and this is part of the message we’re taking to Capitol Hill.”

The Grand President met with:  Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME), U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), co-founder/co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues; Ted Poe (R-TX), who is the founder of the Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus; Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO), and Henry “Hank” Johnson (D-GA).  Moreover, Stamatiades met with the congressional staff of Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), and U.S. Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), who co-chairs the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues.

Stamatiades discussed DOP programs in the areas of Hellenic issues, St. Basil Academy, domestic violence, women’s issues, and senior housing, and furthermore, she began to lay the groundwork for the organization’s first-ever “Capitol Hill” Day to place in March 2008 in concert with AHEPA.

“The members of Congress were very generous of their time and insight on how best to prepare for our effort in March,” added Stamatiades.  “We look forward to working with them on all our issues of interest.”

In October, the Grand President met with several key members of Congress who are of Hellenic heritage.
