Statement from Premier McGuinty re: Remembrance Day

Premier Dalton McGuinty issued the following statement:

"On Remembrance Day, we commemorate those Canadian men and women who served with courage to protect our freedom.

We remember, as well, those who proudly dedicate themselves as peacekeepers in far away lands, risking their lives to make our world safer.

More than 1.5 million Canadians served in the First and Second World Wars and in Korea. More than 110,000 gave their lives so that we may live our lives in freedom.

This year, 2005, marks the Year of the Veteran. It is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those who served in two World Wars and the Korean War - while marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

We honour those young soldiers who left home, family and friends to stand against oppression and injustice - and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us, by laying down their lives.

The poppies that we wear, and the wreaths that are laid today are symbols of the great debt that we owe them.

This year, and every year, let us continue to remember those who gave so much so that all of us can enjoy the great treasure of peace and democracy.

On this Remembrance Day, I encourage all Ontarians to live their lives in the spirit of unity, understanding and peace. It is the legacy that best honours those who made it their duty to serve."

To recognize Remembrance Day, the Premier will join Canadian officials at the Canadian Consulate in Jiangsu, China for a solemn ceremony to honour the bravery and sacrifices of Canadian veterans.
