TORY URGES GAS COMPANIES TO INCREASE TRANSPARENCY

Meets with gas companies to push them for fairness to consumers

(Queen’s Park) ? Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory has strongly urged gas companies to dramatically increase their efforts to be more transparent in the interests of consumers.

“Everyone in this province who has driven a car knows the frustration of skyrocketing gas prices and unexpected price hikes,” said Tory. “Most people don’t have an option of whether or not to use their cars. The gas companies must do better communicating with the public and explaining significant and rapid changes in price.”

Tory met with executives from several gas companies late yesterday afternoon at Queen’s Park. He requested the meeting because there has been no action from Dalton McGuinty’s government. The McGuinty Liberals have apparently decided that this issue is the sole responsibility of the federal government and have attempted to wash their hands of it.

“We have yet another issue here where Ontarians aren’t seeing the leadership they deserve from the high-flying Dalton McGuinty,” said Tory. “Dalton McGuinty should be doing the same thing I did yesterday ? meet with the gas companies and urge the industry to provide consumers with real transparency. How does he expect to change anything if he’s not even going to discuss with these companies how they could do better and how the government might help?”

Tory added: “I told the companies very clearly they must be more proactive, more transparent and do a better job justifying and explaining their prices to the public. That’s the type of thing I would do as Premier of Ontario and it’s the type of leadership this province is sorely lacking.”
