MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES HELPING MORE CHILDREN

AND YOUTH IN MISSISSAUGA SUCCEED

McGuinty Government Investments Helping Ontario’s Vulnerable Young People

MISSISSAUGA – MPP Harinder Takhar announced today that children, youth and families facing mental health and behavioural challenges will see new investments that are helping eight community agencies provide more mental health and behavioural programs and services.

“Our government believes it is important for children, youth and their families to access supports and services as close to home as possible,” said MPP Takhar. “Our government has increased funding for child and youth mental health agencies by nearly $80 million since 2004 and we are working hard on all fronts to improve the lives of our province’s

most vulnerable young people.”

"Many committed organizations in Mississauga will benefit from today's announcement," said Mississauga West MPP, Bob Delaney. "The five percent base funding increase of more than $925,000 will help make sure children in Mississauga don't have to wait as long to access mental health services and programs." This funding builds on previous investments in more than 260 child and youth mental health agencies and 17 hospitalbased outpatient programs across the province.

This is the second increase in base annual funding to the child and youth mental health sector by the McGuinty government since 2004. Prior to the 2004 budget, the sector had not received a base increase for 12 consecutive years. “These new investments are further proof to this government’s ongoing commitment to the Children’s Mental Health sector,” said Mississauga East MPP, Peter Fonseca.

Our local Children’s Mental Health organizations were more than happy to speak on this subject:

“Peel Children's Centre welcomes the news that we will receive a 5% base funding increase from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services," said Humphrey Mitchell, the Centre's Executive Director. "We greatly appreciate this opportunity to increase our treatment

services for children, youth and their families who are experiencing serious emotional difficulties.”

Keith Tansley, Executive Director of Community Living Mississauga says, “The 5.0% increase in the Children’s Mental Health sector is great news. The increase is significant and much appreciated.”
