 MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO REDUCE HEALTH CARE WAIT TIMES IN MISSISSAUGA

$13 Million for Cancer and Cataract Surgeries, Cardiac Procedures, Hip and Knee Replacements, and MRI and CT Scans

Honourable Harinder S. Takhar, MPP for Mississauga Centre announcing the  2007/08 wait time strategy funding at Credit Valley Hospital.

Mississauga – The McGuinty government is building on its successful wait times strategy by funding an additional 30,121 medical procedures this year in Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre, Hon. Harinder Takhar MPP for Mississauga Centre announced today during an announcement at Credit Valley Hospital joined by Bob Delaney MPP for Mississauga West and the Mississauga Halton LHIN.

“Wait times in Mississauga continue to go down,” said Takhar. “We’ve come a long way from not even being able to measure wait times under the previous Tory government to having a plan that will give local patients quicker access to important medical procedures.”

Today's initiative is part of the McGuinty government's plan for innovation in public health care, building a system that delivers on three priorities – keeping Ontarians healthy, reducing wait times and providing better access to doctors and nurses.

The government is investing $13,082,390 to fund 30121 more procedures in Mississauga in 2007/08, including:

·        $2,602,700 for 364 additional total hip and knee joint replacements;

·        $945,000 for 1350 additional cataract surgeries;

·        $6,019,741 for 9120 additional cardiac procedures;

·        $357,249 for 92 additional cancer surgeries;

·        $3,038,900 for 17532 additional MRI exams; and

·        $118,800 for 1663 additional CT exams.

Since the launch of Ontario’s Wait Time Strategy in November 2004, the government has invested more than $895 million for approximately 1,270,000 additional procedures for Ontario patients.

CVH president and CEO, Wayne Fyffe said “we are proud to be able to show continued improvement in our ability to manage our wait times for these surgeries and diagnostic procedures.  The credit goes to our professional staff that, together with administration, have developed creative strategies to meet the wait time targets despite the physical limitations of our hospital’s surgical program.”

"Today's announcement of more than $3.5 million for Credit Valley Hospital is another example of Ontario's commitment to reducing wait times in western Mississauga," said Mississauga West MPP Bob Delaney.  "With our rapidly-growing population, such investments are key to ensuring western Mississauga residents have access to the care they need sooner."
