Capacity Crowd Honours The
Honourable Jim Karygiannis, M.P. A
capacity crowd of seven hundred volunteers and supporters paid tribute
to The Honourable Jim
Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for
Scarborough-Agincourt, at
a special dinner held May 3, 2007. The Scarborough-Agincourt Federal
Liberal Association hosted the dinner at Crystal Fountain Banquet
Hall in Markham, Ontario
Scarborough-Agincourt is one
of the most ethnically diverse ridings in
Canada. The multicultural tapestry of Scarborough-Agincourt was
reflected that night. Members
of the African, Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, English, Greek,
Indian, Italian, Lebanese, Pakistani, South Asian and Sri Lankan
communities enjoyed the warm fellowship of the evening. Many guests
renewed friendships, while
others were introduced for the first time.
Among the guests were the
Honourable Gerry Phillips, Ontario Minister of
Government Services and the Member of Provincial Parliament for
Scarborough-Agincourt and Mr. Chin Lee, Toronto City Councillor for
Scarborough-Rouge River.
In his remarks, Mr. Lee
congratulated Jim on the consistently high caliber
of service he provides to his constituents. Mr. Lee added that, in
his opinion, Jim Karygiannis is the best federal candidate for the riding
of Scarborough-Agincourt.
The Honourable Gerry Phillips
praised Jim for the special relationship he
has developed, over the years, with his constituents. He said that
Jim is, by far, the hardest
working Member of Parliament he has ever known -
representing his constituents effectively in the riding, in the
Parliament of Canada and
around the world. He added that Jim Karygiannis understands the
rich diversity of his riding, his province and his country because he
cares about people and because he has traveled extensively
throughout the world. On a
personal note, Mr. Phillips said that he communicates this
message to people at community organizations and other gatherings,
whether Jim is present or
not.
He emphasized that the guests
have a responsibility to ensure that Mr.
Karygiannis is returned for a seventh consecutive term as the
Member of Parliament for
Scarborough-Agincourt. Adding that the best way to do that is
to volunteer on his campaign during the next federal election.
Addressing the enthusiastic
crowd, Jim Karygiannis thanked everyone for
their outpouring of genuine affection and encouragement. He added
that he was humbled by their
continued support throughout the years and their
volunteer efforts, on his behalf.
Jim said Canada's new
government has put its stamp on the country noting, "Stephen Harper
has done more to destroy Canadian values in a year and a
half, than Brian Mulroney did in nine years."
Furthermore, Canadians are
experiencing many challenges under the Harper
government. He cited longer processing and wait times for
immigration cases and the
government's policy about-face, with respect to assisting employers create
much-needed summer jobs for students, without the input of Members of
Parliament, as examples of the new political culture in Ottawa.
