STATEMENT BY MINISTER MACKAY CONCERNING ATTACK ON UN FORCE IN LEBANON

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, today made the following statement about the bombing that killed six members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon:

“Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms the bombing that killed six members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. We express our deepest condolences to the victims' families, to the peoples and governments of Spain and Colombia and to all members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon affected by this attack.

“This act of terrorism is a direct attack against all UN member countries, and against Lebanese security, stability, democracy and prosperity. The perpetrators of these murders must be brought to justice. More than ever, the Lebanese government, with the support of the international community and all countries in the region, must exert full control over all of its territory and achieve the full implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Prime Minister Siniora has committed to doing so, and we offer him our solid support.”
