LADY LYNX HOST HAMILTON FOR SECOND SCHOOL DAY MATINEE

Lynx/Special Olympics Tournament this weekend

MONDAY May 29, 2006[TORONTO, ON] The Toronto Lady Lynx will look to extend their undefeated streak to start the season when they host the Hamilton Lady Avalanche on Wednesday morning, May 31 at 11:00 AM for the annual School Day matinee at Centennial Park Stadium.  The 2-0-0 Lady Lynx have scored 11 goals in their first two matches and have yet to concede a goal defensively.  The Lady Lynx will feature last week’s W-League Player of the Week Sylvia Forbes, who was recognized for spectacular 4-goal performance against Vermont on May 21 in a 4-0 Toronto win.  Defender Robin Rushton was also named to the W-League Team of the Week following the May 21 match recognizing her stellar defensive play and her assist on Forbes’ first goal.

The expansion Hamilton Lady Avalanche will be making their first trip to Toronto in what expects to be a fierce rivalry between the two clubs.  The 0-2-0 Lady Avalanche have yet to win on the young season, but with a number of ex-Lady Lynx players on their roster, they will be eager for a good showing.  Keeper Stacey VanBoxmeer, defender Kristy DeVries, midfielder Chiara Greco and striker Heather MacDougall all will be returning to Centennial Stadium for the first time in opposition colours.

LADY LYNX HEAD FOR SUDBURY THIS WEEKEND

Following Wednesday’s home match, the Lady Lynx will take to the road for the first time in ’06 when they head north up the 400 to battle the Sudbury Canadians at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 3.  The Canadians currently sit last in the Northern Division with an 0-4-0 record and like the Lady Avalanche, have yet to find the net.   The Lady Lynx swept all three meetings in 2005 against the Canadians, including a 1-0 win in Sudbury.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS/LYNX TOURNAMENT BEFORE USL FIRST DIVISION MATCH

The Toronto Branch of Special Olympics Ontario has once again partnered with the Toronto Lynx Soccer Club for the delivery of an energetic Soccer Tournament, which will be taking place on Sunday June 4th at Centennial Park Stadium. The inaugural TSO/Lynx tournament took place in June 2005 with great success with a view to having the Lynx players mentor TSO/SOO soccer players.

Approximately ten Special Olympics soccer teams from throughout the Greater Toronto area will be taking part in this event, which is running from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. All participating athletes will also take part in a midday soccer clinic and Greet and Meet with the Toronto Lynx players.

To cap off this soccer experience, all participating teams, families and friends are invited to attend the USL First Division match on June 4th when the Lynx take on the Virginia Beach Mariners kicking off at 6:00. During the pre-game ceremonies, there will be a SOO parade of champions to recognize all the teams in the tournament, as well as a ceremonial kick-off.

“On behalf of the event organizers, I would like to express our delight with the co-operation of the Toronto Lynx and the continued growth of this tournament. The mentorship of the Lynx team creates very positive benefits for everyone involved”, said Special Olympics representative Alex McDonald.

"We are very proud to have such a wonderful partnership with the TSO and SOO since 1998. We have lots of fans in this community and it warms our hearts to see these athletes reach their full potential through the mentorship of our Lynx players!”, declares Nicole Hartrell, the club's COO and owner.

The Lynx will be looking for their first win of the season against the Mariners on Sunday evening at Centennial Park Stadium.   Newly acquired striker Kevin Jeffrey will make his debut in the Lynx’ colours in the match, and his presence will be welcomed by the club, who have only found the net once in 6 matches to start the 2006 USL-1 season.  Jeffrey has 52 career goals in the A-League/USL First Division over six seasons of play with Richmond and San Francisco.  Sunday’s match will be the second meeting of the season between the two clubs, with the Mariners having edged the Lynx 2-0 in the season opener for both clubs on April 22 in Virginia Beach.
