$170 MILLION WASTED ON HEALTH BUREAUCRACY

McGuinty Liberals spend millions firing officials, closing offices and then re-hiring people

(Queen’s Park) – The McGuinty Liberals’ scheme to add more bureaucracy to the health care system will waste as much as $170 million, a secret Cabinet document revealed today by Official Opposition Leader John Tory shows.

“The McGuinty Liberal massive tax increase is going to pay for bureaucracy and mismanagement,” said Tory. “They are wasting $170 million that could go to improve patient care. Instead it is going to firing people, consolidating offices, then hiring a good number of those people back, and replacing the previous structure with higher salaries and increased waste.”

The Cabinet document reveals that the McGuinty Liberals:

  • Will spend $52 million to hire 560 bureaucrats to replace the 150 local health officials that they are spending $27 million to fire;

  • Will waste $90 million to close and consolidate community care access centers ($50 million in severance costs, $14 million in legal costs and $25 million in wage costs);

  • Do not have any plan for health care in Ontario and a scheme to develop Local Health Integration Networks  (LHINs) is nothing more than an exercise in increased bureaucracy.

This money is on top of $91 million the McGuinty Liberals are spending to fire nurses, totaling over a quarter of a billion in wasted money from mismanaging the health care system.

“The people of Ontario have been wondering for the last year what happened to the money from McGuinty’s signature broken promise – his massive tax increase,” said Tory. “Now they know but this is not the answer they were looking for. This is an astonishing waste of taxpayers dollars and shameful mismanagement of the health care system.”
