Promoting and Protecting Religious Freedom

May 22, 2013 - Ottawa - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney (not shown), and Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador for Religious Freedom, meet with members of the Shi’a community today in Ottawa. The group discussed key matters concerning freedom of religion for Shi’a Muslims, including the persecution some Shi’as face abroad, and ways in which Canada’s Office of Religious Freedom could support efforts to promote and protect their basic rights.

During the meeting, Baird underscored Canada’s commitment to continue to speak out against egregious violations of freedom of religion, reject efforts by those who wish to provoke sectarian tensions, and condemn attacks on places of worship around the world.
