AFGLC hosted
Mayor Dimitris L. Avramopoulos
The
American foundation for Greek language and culture, afglc, in cooperation
with the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (USA), hosted the
distinguished former Mayor of Athens Dimitris L. Avramopoulos for a series
of lectures at “The AFGLC-Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic
Studies” at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. Mayor
Avramopoulos addressed the faculty, students and community leaders on
”Athens, a world city”. His inspired presentation included his
outstanding accomplishments as Mayor of the City of Athens and the role
that major cities can play in the formulation of international policy.
More specifically, as Mayor of Athens, he initiated a new concept in the
field of international relations, the diplomacy of the cities that
received official endorsements from the Secretary Generals of the United
Nations, among others. Mayor
Avramopoulos addressed the members of the AFGLC in Tampa Bay on the
mission and objectives on his creation of a world union of Olympic Cities,
a concept which has been accepted by the President of the International
community and will play a major role on the future of Olympic Games. The
Tampa Bay Council of Foreign Affairs hosted Mayor Avramopoulos in a press
conference/ workshop that dealt with various current and past
international political and economic issues. A
reception dinner, was given to honor the presence of Mayor Avramopoulos by
The American Foundation of Greek Language and Culture which (included
several academic administrators from the University of South Florida,
business leaders, local and State Government Officials). Dr. Chris P.
Tsokos, President of AFGLC, recognized Mayor Avramopoulos for his
outstanding accomplishments as a public servant for the Hellenic Republic
and for having given a new meaning to the concept of “City” and its
impact in a globalized society. He was made an honorary life long member
of AFGLC.
