Mr. Jelco Kacim, MRE (Member of the European Union Parliament)Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Substitute Member of the Delegation to the EU- FYROM Joint Parliamentary Committee Fax: 322 284 9748 E-mail: jkacin@europarl.eu.int Dear Mr. Kacin, Re: F.Y.R.O.M. It has come to our attention, through the Macedonian Press Agency of Thessaloniki, Greece (http://www.mpa.gr/article.html?doc_id=527381), that recently, by a letter to the House of Commons of the UK, you have urged the British Government, in its capacity as a member of the UN Security Council, to recognize F.Y.R.O.M. under the name “Republic of Macedonia”. On behalf of
our members, Canadian citizens of Hellenic origin from Macedonia, Greece
(not to be confused with FYROM), we are writing to you to bring to your
attention, that your action
is politically
unacceptable, because it undermines the efforts of the United Nations
mediation process to reach
a mutually acceptable name for
FYROM. Therefore it does not serve the cause of peace in the area. In the
recent dispute between Slovenia and Croatia over territorial waters,
surely you would not have liked others to support Croatia, while the two
countries were trying to settle this dispute. Greece is
involved in a serious dispute with FYROM over the illegitimate
appropriation of the name “Macedonia” and its adjective
“Macedonian” to designate this country and the ethnic identity of its
dominant Slavic population respectively.
Associating directly these names with the overall geographic area
of Macedonia (52% of which is an integral part of Greece) the Slav
dominated government of FYROM
is promoting their irredentist propaganda against Greece and brainwashing
their younger generations
with their dream of a “Greater Macedonia”. This behavior is not the
recipe for peace and stability
in the Balkan region. On the other hand, Members of the Delegation to the EU – FYROM Joint Committee, must consider taking actions that will strengthen the unity among the EU members and bring peace and prosperity to all European nations. Sincerely yours, Pan-Macedonian Association of Canada
