Ministry of Labour

Build Your Career As You Build A Safer Ontario

Ontario’s Ministry of Labour is looking for well-qualified people to join our team of dedicated Occupational Health and Safety Inspectors.  If you want to make a difference by making Ontario a safer place to work, get ready to sign up.

As an Occupational Health and Safety Inspector, you can make a difference by helping to prevent workplace injuries and deaths.

You will be at the forefront of a bold new initiative to promote safer workplaces and make Ontario the place to be for years to come and protect Ontario’s most precious resource, our people’s health and safety.

You will be among 200 new health and safety inspectors we are hiring.  This represents a major investment in workplace safety in Ontario.

We are determined to achieve our goal of cutting workplace injuries by 20 per cent by 2008.  This will result in the prevention of 60,000 workplace injuries a year.

Every year, approximately 300,000 workplace injuries occur.  Approximately 100,000 of these injuries are serious enough to require people to miss work.  In addition, last year, 100 people were killed on the job.

We estimate cost of lost productivity to Ontario businesses each year from injuries is $12 billion.  That’s a lot of economic activity.  But there’s another cost that we can’t put a figure to.  That’s the emotional cost of pain and suffering to injured workers.

And it is not just the workers who are affected.  Their friends, families and co-workers are also affected when a worker is injured or killed.

We are committed to changing this.   And you can be a part of this important work.  You can save lives.

To join our team of Occupational Health and Safety Inspectors, you must have the following qualifications:

  • Working knowledge and practical experience in a broad range of construction, mining or industrial settings

  • Ability to identify, evaluate and control health and safety hazards

  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act/Regulations and other standards/legislation as it relates to construction, industrial or mining workplaces

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations, enforce legislation, participate in court procedures

  • Experience in handling labour/management issues including resolving conflicts

  • Sound planning, organizational/communications skills including experience in writing clear and concise reports

  • Demonstrated ability to use notebook technology in a windows environment
