MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT MOVING ON CANADA-ONTARIO IMMIGRATION AGREEMENT

January 19, 2004

TORONTO - As Ontario moves to negotiate an immigration

agreement with the federal government, Ontario's Citizenship

and Immigration Minister Dr. Marie Bountrogianni will attend a

meeting of Canadian immigration ministers to learn from the

experiences of other jurisdictions.

"The McGuinty government is committed to working with the federal

government to secure a Canada-Ontario immigration agreement that

helps immigrants integrate quickly and contribute to the economy,"

said Dr. Bountrogianni. "No workforce benefits more from immigration

than Ontario's.  It is crucial to harness the skills and expertise

of new Ontarians to ensure they can contribute at their full

potential."

The immigration ministers meeting takes place January 21- 22 in

Victoria, British Columbia.

"Immigrants to Ontario contribute to the province's culture, society

and economic growth," said Dr. Bountrogianni.

In the coming weeks, Dr. Bountrogianni will also be consulting with

immigration stakeholders, including municipalities, in preparation

for negotiations on a Canada-Ontario immigration agreement.

"We are working towards positive change, building on our new

collaborative relationship with the federal government," she added.
