Province Improves Driver's Licence Security

 Applicant ID Requirements Tightened

TORONTO, Jan. 13 /CNW/ - The McGuinty government is strengthening the security of Ontario driver's licences by limiting the types of personal

identity documents that can be used to apply for a licence, Transportation

Minister Harinder Takhar announced today.

"This is part of our government's ongoing plan to enhance the security of Ontario driver's licences and the issuance process. The new requirements have been developed with other provincial and state governments to ensure the identity of individuals applying for a driver's licence," said Takhar.

This enhancement fulfills a recommendation of the Auditor General of

Ontario whose 2005 report suggested limiting the number of identification

documents accepted by the ministry.

As of January 23, 2006, personal identification documents must be valid when presented before getting a driver's licence. Acceptable identification documents include:

    1.  Passport (Canadian or Foreign)

    2.  Canadian Citizenship Card with photo

    3.  Permanent immigration documents

    4.  Temporary immigration documents

    5.  Birth Certificate (Canadian and US)

    6.  Canadian Certificate of Indian Status

    7.  Driver's Licence (Canadian and US)

    8.  Identity Card (Canadian and US, valid) Government issued or

        Student Card

    9.  Ontario Health Card (if voluntarily presented)

    10. Marriage Certificate (Canadian or Foreign) Government issued

    11. Change of Name Certificate

    12. Court Order

    13. Sworn Affidavit with supporting documents to be accompanied with

appropriate immigration documents (e.g. certified copies of school

        records, employment records)

A full list of acceptable documents is available on the ministry's

website and at DriveTest Centres.

"We continue to work with Canadian and US jurisdictions to implement

common standards and enhance the security of Ontario's driver's licences," said Takhar.
