A CERTIFICATION OF COMPETENCE IN MODERN GREEK

AT HELLENIC STUDIES AT SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY

 

 

We are very pleased to announce that HELLENIC STUDIES AT SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY is going to operate as an examination centre for the Certification of Competence in Modern Greek offered by the CENTRE FOR THE GREEK LANGUAGE, THESSALONIKI, GREECE. The Certificate of Attainment in Greek is recognized by the Greek Ministry of Education and it may be used by successful candidates to prove their proficiency in Modern Greek language.

The exams are going to take place at the SFU Burnaby campus in May 2006 [exact location will be announced]. Candidates are tested on four levels of linguistic proficiency and are assessed in four skills, namely, production and comprehension of written language, production and comprehension of spoken language. The results will be announced by the examination centre in late July, and the certificates will be awarded to the successful candidates at the end of October.

 

The 2006 examinations for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek will be held on May 16 and 17. The dates for registration and examination for the year 2006 are the following:

THE UTILITY OF THE CERTIFICATE OF ATTAINMENT IN GREEK

 

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek:

. Provides any user of Greek with an expert and objective opinion of the level of their knowledge

. Serves as proof of the successful candidate's level of attainment in Greek in the work market

. Is a requirement for the practice of various professions in Greece.

. At Level C allows foreigners to register at a Greek institution of higher education, in case they do not have a Greek secondary education certificate (P.D. 138/9-7-99)

. At Level D allows citizens of European Union member states to prove complete knowledge and fluent use of the Greek language and thus be employed in a Greek civil service position.

 

 

LEVELS OF PROFICIENCY

Candidates are tested on four levels. The levels correspond to communicative situations and Greek language needs that progressively become more complex. Each level has the following characteristics:

Level A
Successful candidates should be in a position to understand broadly a conversation between two native speakers or a simple text about common everyday matters, various simple press reports, radio or television broadcasts, or public announcements; to communicate or exchange basic information and write short simple texts.

Level B
Successful candidates should be in a position to comprehend essential details of particular topics, such as newspaper advertisements, instructions of use of particular products, personal letters, messages, reports, commentaries, etc. They should be in a position to communicate effectively in a limited range of situations, to express personal views in a simple manner, and to compose short texts aiming to convey information on a limited variety of subjects.

Level C
Successful candidates should be in a position to understand and draw clear information and views presented in the context of a conversation between three or four speakers or in texts included in newspapers, magazines, regulations and official documents. They should also be able to participate and respond effectively in the context of a friendly or formal conversation, to express personal opinions and experiences explicitly and accurately and to provide the required detailed information.

Level D
Successful candidates should be in a position to understand discussions on various topics, possibly unknown to them, in which many speakers participate; to extract information, to understand implied statements in written and spoken language and to identify the purpose of different text types. They should also be in a position to efficiently express views formed on the basis of personal and professional experiences with a high degree of fluency and accuracy in a wide range of subjects.
