Statement by Stephen Harper on the

60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz

OTTAWA – Conservative leader and Leader of the Opposition Stephen Harper issued the following statement today:

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, I join the world in remembering the anniversary of the end of one of the darkest periods in world history.  The liberation of the Auschwitz prison camp in Poland on January 27, 1945 marked the end of a horrific ordeal for thousands of freed prisoners.  Many of those freed were left with a lifetime of coping with the fact that friends, family and loved ones were never able to walk away from Auschwitz the way they did, having been systematically put to death for no other reason than their religion or ethnicity.  Auschwitz remains the final resting place for over 1.1 million people who were killed inside the prison walls during the Holocaust.

“Our thoughts are with the survivors and with the families of those who did not see the final days of the concentration camp.  It is our solemn promise that we will not forget the lessons we have learned from Auschwitz, and that we will remain vigilant.  The horrors of Auschwitz must never be repeated. ”
