Concerning
the recent CBS anti-Hellenic news cast
The
coverage of terrorism in Greece was a very distasteful propaganda
in light
of the upcoming talks between the Greek Prime minister and George
W. Bush.
It
is shameful and was witnessed by a country of people who are closely
related
to the USA on a national and family level. A country that is
still
the safest European nation for its citizens and visitors (lowest crime
rate),
and with still fewer terrorist attacks than most Western countries;
especially
the USA and Great Britain (We should not forget that the War
on
Terrorism is fought by the hosts of the most well-known terrorist group,
the
IRA).
What
a shameful display: Rhetorical questions of the "would you trust
Greece?"
type, reversing/manufacturing political statements from the
Minister,
referring to Nov.17 as the day when a US-supported "political
party"
was overturned, citing Greece as the incubator of terrorists who
kill
Americans over the past 2 decades. Inaccuracies like demonstrating
events
of
2-3 decades ago as if they
happened yesterday, spreading panic and
anti-Hellenism
in the minds of American viewers, torching distrust between
the
two nations, and the feeling that Greece is the center of anti-American
sentiment. All
of the above, skillfully placed in the most prominent Sunday prime-time
news
reporting show, CBS' 60 minutes, only days after the meeting of
Greek
prime minister Simitis and US president Bush in Washington, DC. The
itinerary of the meeting is likely to include the re-surfaced talks of
setting
new sea borders between Turkey and Greece, usage of Greek air
space
by Turkish air planes,
reintroduction of Cyprus in the Hellenic-Turkish discussions, as well as
the military and intelligence cooperation of the two nations (Greece and
USA) against world terrorism. I would not be surprised if the outcome of
the meeting is negative to Greeks everywhere, and forms another setback
for Greek foreign policy, all with the blessings of the (recently
enraged and brain washed) American public opinion.
Anti-Hellenism
has grown like a virus over the past 3 decades, with
frequent
known supporters, such as the New York Times, the Time magazine, and other
U.K.- and American-based media, so this current event is far from
unprecedented. Yet, it is time for it to stop. Without disregard to the
first Greek settlers of north America, we are now not in the disadvantage
of being the nation that is constituted by hard-working yet
non-influential people and small-business owners. There is now a core of
second and third generation Greeks, the children of the first immigrants,
who are highly educated, influential, politically-involved and
well-respected. Those people can be the protesters and protectors of our
culture, and should be involved.
Please, do not omit to write to CBS and all anti-Hellenic
supporters, and to express your deepest conviction and determination that
anti-Hellenism is discrimination, and it won't stand.
Sincerely,
