Tampa, Florida. The University of South Florida, a tier 1 graduate research university with more than 42,500 students and 2,500 faculty, bestowed the honorific title of Distinguished University Professor upon Dr. Chris P. Tsokos. The Distinguished University Professor title is the highest honor the university can bestow on its faculty. Professor Tsokos was recognized for this honorific title for his truly outstanding national and international research accomplishments, his extraordinary educational service, his leadership and philanthropic contributions and for his service to our country.

 

Professor Tsokos obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science and Mathematics and the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Rhode Island.  He obtained the Ph.D. in Probability and Statistics from the University of Connecticut.  Professor Tsokos has participated in special graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The Pennsylvania State University.  Dr. Tsokos has published more than 275 research papers in the theory and application of Mathematical Sciences in outstanding national and international journals.  He is the author or co-author of more than fifteen books or research monographs in his areas of expertise.

 

Dr. Tsokos’ research activities have been funded by the National Science Foundation, the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research, NASA, the U.S. Army Research Office, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Environmental Protection Agency, among others.

 

Professor Tsokos has delivered more than 300 technical presentations at numerous academic institutions and conferences, both in the United States and abroad.  He was invited by the Russian Academy of Science and the educational minister of the People’s Republic of China for extensive lecture and technical advice tours in their universities, institutes and professional organizations.

 

Dr. Tsokos has been elected and is currently serving on the editorial board of more than twelve national and international professional journals in mathematical sciences and operations research.  He has directed the doctoral research of more than thirty students who are presently engaged in leading roles in academic institutions, in federal government agencies and private industry.  He has also supervised the advancement of more than sixty graduate students that have been awarded their master degrees.

 

For the past 25 years Professor Tsokos has served as advisor/consultant to several divisions of the United States armed forces and other federal agencies, including U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in addition to several leading private and public international Fortune 500 corporations including Bell Telephone Laboratories, AT&T, M&M Mars, IBM, among others.

 

Professor Tsokos is serving as the founding president of the International and American Foundations for Greek Language and Culture, IFGLC/AFGLC, non-profit public organizations with headquarters in Tampa, Florida.  IFGLC/AFGLC’s primary mission is the preservation and enhancement of Greek culture and language worldwide through institutions of higher learning.  To this end, it aims at establishing Interdisciplinary Centers for Hellenic Studies, ICHS.  IFGLC/AFGLC under Dr. Tsokos’ leadership has made and continues to make significant accomplishments in fulfilling its noble educational mission. 

 

Professor Tsokos co-founded and directed the Urban Scholars Outreach Program, USF, in Tampa, Florida.  This successful educational program provides free academic assistance to disadvantaged African American and Hispanic students in mathematics, reading and writing.  He was honored for his efforts with the Spirit of Humanity Award from the Debartolo—Time Warner Foundation.

 

Professor Tsokos has been honored by multiple professional societies worldwide.  He was elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the International Statistical Institute and was also awarded the USF Distinguished Scholar Award and the Sigma Xi Outstanding Research Award.  Dr. Tsokos is listed in Outstanding Educators in America, Who’s Who in the South, Men of Achievement, International Who’s Who among Intellectuals, Who’s Who in Technology Today, Who’s Who of Hellenic Heritage, Sigma Xi, and in many other distinguished publications.  In addition, Professor Tsokos is a member of several national and international societies in the Mathematical Sciences and Statistics.  He is the recipient of the URI Alumni Excellence Award in Sciences & Technology, the USF Teaching Incentive Program Award, the USF Professional Excellence Program Award, the USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and the USF President’s Award for Excellence.

 

Professor Tsokos is the recipient of the Pan Cyprian Award for Education, Freedom of Human Rights, and the Spirit of Humanity Award of Time Warner.  The Hellenic Voice, leading Greek-American newspaper, bestowed upon Dr. Tsokos the “Hellene of the Year Award for 2003:  Humanities & Education.”
