NEW AFGLC CENTER OPENS IN DALLAS-FORT
WORTH METROPLEX
Dallas,
Texas. Professor Chris P. Tsokos,
President of the American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture (AFGLC)
proudly announces the formation of a new center in the Dallas-Fort Worth,
Texas, metropolitan area, the first of several planned for the Lone Star
State. Its mission will be to preserve and enhance the Greek cultural
heritage in Texas, through the establishment of Inter- disciplinary
Centers of Hellenic Studies on the campuses of local institutions of
higher learning.

George Carayannopoulos, President, AFGLC- TEXAS Center
A dynamic young slate of officers has signed
on, ready to work with the numerous university campuses in the area. They
are led by Dr. George Carayannopoulos, president; Dr. Chris Michael,
vice-president; Demetrios Lahiri, treasurer; and Athanasios Doussis,
secretary.
The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, located in north central Texas, is home
to over three million people, and contains three Greek Orthodox
communities. Greeks have been part of the metroplex population since the
turn of the twentieth century, when many came to work in the packing
plants and railroads.
In time, Dr. Carayannopoulos and his team hope to establish additional
centers in other university communities throughout Texas, including
Austin, Houston, San Antonio and El Paso.
The President, Dr. Carayannopoulos, graduated from The University of Texas
with an Honors BA in biochemistry, and obtained his doctorate in medicine
from the UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he also did his residency.
After obtaining his diploma from the American Board of Internal Medicine,
he completed his clinical fellowship as an internist at the University of
Athens, Laiko Hospital. He also did his cardiology rotation in Athens, at
the Onasseio Hospital. He is presently completing a cardiology/electrophysiology
fellowship at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
The Vice-President, Dr. Michael, is a graduate of Duke University with a
major in English and a minor in Classical Studies and Greek. He obtained
his doctorate in medicine from the Baylor College of Medicine, where he
also did his residency in neurosurgery. He presently is a neurosurgeon at
the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
The Treasurer, Mr. Lahiri, obtained his two bachelor's degrees in
economics and business, and economics and finance, at Southern Methodist
University, where he also obtained a master's in business administration.
He has served as an account executive for Dean Witter Reynolds and
Enterprise Financial Group, and as vice-president and consultant of
Dynamic Revenue Solutions, Inc. He is currently a consultant and
divisional development manager for AFAS, Inc.
The Secretary, Athanasios Doussis, is a graduate of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology with a B.S. in electrical engineering and an M.S.
in electrical engineering and computer science, Mr. Doussis has served as
an associate consultant with Bain and Co., Inc., and is presently employed
as a product marketing engineer for Texas Instruments, Inc.
AFGLC Headquarters is very pleased to have
such a distinguished group of individuals to work with in fulfilling our
noble educational mission of Hellenism in the State of Texas.
