 CYPRUS:  A MODEL WORLD CITIZEN

By Marcos P. Sivitanides, PhD, CCP. Austin, Texas

20 July 2006.   The Republic of Cyprus is showing the rest of the world
a prime example of modern model world-citizen behavior.  Without any
hesitation, President Papadopoulos and his cabinet are doing everything
possible to facilitate the evacuation of Americans and other world
citizens from Lebanon to the safety and comfort of a stable, peaceful
CYPRUS, a country member of the EU.  CYPRUS deserves a big "Thank-You"
from the rest of the world and especially from the United States of
America.  Thousands of grateful Americans will forever remember the
moment they landed safely in CYPRUS by air or sea.  As a member of the
EU, the United Nations and a model world citizen, the Government of
CYPRUS is providing any and all possible aid to the Americans and other
world citizens who are fleeing a burning Lebanon.

All this comes on the exact anniversary (20 July 1974) of the military
invasion of Cyprus by Turkey, which resulted in the loss of 3,000
Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot lives, the forceful move of 50,000
Turkish-Cypriots to the North part of the island and the forceful move
of 250,000 Greek-Cypriots to the South part of the island, and the
military occupation of the northern one third of the island by 40,000
Turkish soldiers, to this very date.

Cypriots know very well how it feels to be in harms way.  They know how
it feels to flee from artillery shells, air-bombardment and exploding
shells killing people.  The Americans and other world citizens are most
welcome in Cyprus, exactly because Cypriots know how it feels to flee
from Hell.

A heartfelt "Thank-You" to President Papadopoulos for welcoming my
fellow Americans so warmly in Cyprus and a small wish that soon the
world community will decide to resolve the military occupation of the
northern part of Cyprus by the Turkish army with a peaceful, fair and
just arrangement.
