AHEPA Applauds Opening of Ledra Street
Crossing in Nicosia
WASHINGTON,
DC (April 8, 2008)-The
membership of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA),
a leading association for the nation's 1.4 million American citizens of
Greek ancestry, and Philhellenes, applauds the opening of the Ledra Street
crossing in Nicosia, the last divided capital in Europe, announced
National President Ike Gulas.
"We
view this as a positive development," said Gulas. "We have
believed that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can co-exist
harmoniously, and we welcome this news as a stepping-stone in the process
for a solution. We share in the excitement of the Cypriot people;
many of whom called it a historic day."
He
added, "We are cautiously optimistic that this is a sign of better
things to come as preparations are being made for negotiations to resume
after a four-year hiatus."
AHEPA
was established in 1922, by visionary Greek-Americans to protect all from
prejudice from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA has joined with the
NAACP and B'nai B'rith International to fight discrimination.
