GREEKTOWN ON THE DANFORTH COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY-

-APRIL 22

(Toronto, Ontario) -- On Friday, April 22, 2005, GreekTown on the Danforth Business Improvement Area, together with Toronto Police Service 54 and 55 Divisions, will be holding a community clean-up day to celebrate Earth Day and prepare our neighbourhood for the upcoming summer season.  With the assistance of officers and auxiliaries from both Divisions, our local schools and members of the GreekTown BIA, we will be picking up litter and removing graffiti from the streets and alleyways of our area.

For the first time in GreekTown’s history, in addition to our BIA members, we are gathering all the stakeholders to participate in this substantial undertaking.  Both 54 and 55 Divisions of the Toronto Police Service will be providing officers and auxiliaries to help on April 22nd.  Councillor Case Ootes, Ward 29 Toronto Danforth and Councillor Paula Fletcher, Ward 30 Toronto Danforth have both been instrumental in facilitating this initiative and will be joining us for the actual clean up. The City of Toronto Municipal Licensing & Standards will be sending by-law officers to educate property owners on the new regulations regarding graffiti.  The Toronto Parking Authority will have staff on site to clean the pay and display units on our street.  Canada Post will be sending representatives to look after their postal boxes and students from our local schools will be pitching in to pick up litter and get rid of the graffiti.

“GreekTown is one of Toronto’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan neighbourhoods.  As one of the city’s most pedestrian-friendly districts, our wide sidewalks are made for strolling and our plethora of outdoor cafés beckon visitors to stop and sit for a while,” says Mr. George Sciouris, Beautification Chair for the BIA Board of Management.  “Our community takes great civic pride in our clean and safe streets and Earth Day provides us with the perfect opportunity to spruce up the area by getting rid of any graffiti and garbage” he goes on to say.

The GreekTown on the Danforth Business Improvement Area, the Community Police Liaison Committees from 54 and 55 Divisions, Councillor Case Ootes Ward 29 Toronto Danforth and Councillor Paula Fletcher Ward 30 Toronto Danforth have generously provided the financial assistance to fund this initiative.
